Funny, New Picture Book Introduces Financial Literacy by Teaching Children about Money in a Fun and Enjoyable Way; The Yoyo and the Piggy Bank; Peter E. Randall Publisher
Portsmouth, NH (PRWEB) April 20, 2015 -- Financial literacy is one of the most overlooked yet vital life skills for children (and adults) to learn. Planning consultant and financial adviser Susan Werner Thoresen has created a fun-filled story for children 5-9, "The Yoyo and the Piggy Bank", that introduces the concepts of goal-setting and delayed gratification through the story of Anna, a young girl who decides to take on odd jobs around the neighborhood to buy a beautiful yoyo like her friend Jackson’s.
Anna is ultimately successful in her goal, working hard and getting support from family, friends, and neighbors as she earns the $5 she needs. Seamlessly integrated into the story are foundational lessons in counting, numbers and operations, and early algebraic thinking as Anna counts her coins and works with groups of objects to figure out sums and products. "The Yoyo and the Piggy Bank" is complementary to integrated, STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculums and Common Core standards emphasizing critical thinking skills and the ability to apply math to real-life situations.
While teaching children about money, the story also introduces fun facts about history of U.S. currency, such as: "Which U.S. coin has a baby on it? Which coins show our states?" Anna earns coins of all denominations up through both the Susan B. Anthony and Sakajawea dollar coins. She even learns the benefits of waiting for a sale. Either read by older students or read to emerging readers by parents or teachers, "The Yoyo and the Piggy Bank" lends itself to open-ended discussions on topics from coin collecting and financial planning to yoyo tricks and the best way to clean a filthy dog house.
Susan Werner Thoresen, from Portsmouth, NH, has educated on financial literacy to audiences ranging from children to retirees, non-profits and local governments. Her guidance empowers others to control their financial destinies. As a children’s writer, Thoresen enjoyed the mentorship of Else Holmelund Minarik, author of the Little Bear books. The beautiful color illustrations by Keith Eveland show Anna’s journey with humor and detail.
"The Yoyo and the Piggy Bank" will be released April 27, 2015. It is 40 pages, with full color ink/watercolor illustrations, 10"x8" hardcover, ISBN 978-1-942155-05-8 and retails for $16.95.
