Future Hosting Remains a Strong Supporter of Net Neutrality
Southfield, MI (PRWEB) June 07, 2017 -- Future Hosting, a managed server hosting provider, has reaffirmed its strong support for net neutrality and its opposition to recent attempts to erode the foundations of a free and open web (as reported in Ars Technica on June 1).
As a provider of web and infrastructure hosting services to businesses of all sizes, Future Hosting is dismayed by efforts to undo the work of the FCC under the previous administration. Among other measures that give Future Hosting clients cause for concern is the attempt to reclassify broadband as an “information service,” rather than a telecommunication service. The reclassification, which Future Hosting believes is based on spurious reasoning, would significantly relax the restrictions on ISPs around throttling, paid prioritization, and zero rating of favored services.
There are technical reasons for bandwidth providers to manage the flow of data around the network, but historically that management has been in the best interest of consumers. Without net neutrality, last-mile ISPs will be able to prioritize revenue to the disadvantage of consumers and their ability to access the web.
“The erosion of net neutrality will harm competition on the web. Zero rating and paid prioritization favor established companies that can afford to make deals with ISPs,” said Maulesh Patel, VP of Operations of Future Hosting, “Startups and smaller businesses without the ability to establish the same relationships won’t be able to compete, and the web will quickly lose its status as the home of innovation and disruption.”
Since its inception, the internet has enshrined a principle of equal access to the network. Businesses pay bandwidth providers for the bandwidth they consume. Consumers pay last-mile ISPs for access to the network and bandwidth. ISPs should connect consumers with businesses without interference. Relaxing the restrictions on ISPs will allow them to, for example, throttle consumer connections to services for which they haven’t paid a premium. In a world without net neutrality, it’s unlikely that we’d have the thriving online economy from which we all benefit.
