Gabriel Pediatrics Discusses the Possibility of Developing Eosinophilic Esophagitis after Outgrowing Common Food Allergies

According to an article published on March 3th by RedOrbit News titled “Children Who Outgrow Allergies May Have Severe Recurrences,” Jonathan M. Spergel, MD, PhD from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, believes that children might outgrow common food allergies, but they might not outgrow the probability of developing eosinophilic esophagitis from the same foods.
The study was performed at the Center for Pediatric Eosinophilic Disorders (amongst the top programs in the nation for the treatment of Eosinophilic Esophagitis), located in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where 1,375 children were seen between 2000 and 2012. These were the results:
• The exact food caused the disorder for 31 percent of patients, most commonly milk, egg, soy, or wheat.
• 17 out of 425 children developed eosinophilic esophagitis to a food after outgrowing IgE-(hypersensitivity to food) mediated allergy to that same food.
• Children with eating difficulties may be suffering from the disorder, as it is known to cause inflammation of the esophagus.
• About 10 percent of patients who undergo desensitization therapy for IgE-mediated food allergies go on to develop EoE to the same food, as noted by Spergel.
