Gardens of the World Demonstrate Five Beautiful Ways Californians Can Save 35-50 Percent More Water
La Cañada-Flintridge, California (PRWEB) April 27, 2015 -- Elected officials, landscaping experts and Do Good Bus volunteers are showing the La Cañada-Flintridge community beautiful ways to save water. One of the communities with a mandate to reduce water use by 35 percent, La Cañada also hosts a unique demonstration garden, Gardens of the World, featuring foliage from the five Los Angeles climate-compatible regions of the world.
"With California's water supplies at critical levels, the need to reduce our water use has never been more urgent," said Senator Carol Liu. “Descanso Gardens' new California friendly Center Circle garden, along with the water-wise Gardens of the World at La Cañada Public Library, give the community working examples of how we can conserve this precious resource and still have beautiful landscapes."
The drought tolerant Gardens of the World feature noninvasive, Los Angeles climate compatible foliage from Australia, California, Chile, the Mediterranean Basin,and South Africa. The gardens' vibrant foliage looks lush year round, even in drought years. The La Cañada Public Library makes the design plans for each garden available to the public, and the plant palettes are available on FormLA Landscaping's Pinterest page.
“Los Angeles can have lush landscapes that use little water,” noted Descanso Gardens Executive Director David R. Brown. “Descanso Gardens and La Cañada Valley Beautiful hope to show Angelenos that we need not settle for a desert aesthetic. We simply need smarter designs that recognize our region’s true climate.”
Experts from La Cañada Valley Beautiful, Descanso Gardens, the Theodore Payne Foundation and FormLA Landscaping provided volunteers from across Los Angeles County with a hands-on drought tolerant gardening tips and experience at the gardens this weekend.
“Californians will have to be both proactive and innovative in preserving one of this state’s most essential and precious resources,” noted Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who has authored five pieces of water-conservation legislation since taking office in 2010. “We need to do our best to reduce consumption and invest in water-use efficiency to help us weather this drought, and future droughts, more easily.”
