Garmin VIRB Elite Big Sky Tram Test By HRWC
Bozeman, MT (PRWEB) January 26, 2014 -- VIRB Elite came out last weekend for its first official skiing test with skiing world vertical 12 hour record holder Rusty Squire.
"We shot tons of footage skiing the 35 to 40 degree slopes of upper Marx and Lenin," says Squire.
He adds, "We also tore up some groomed runs on Elk Park Ridge and Big Horn, where I set the 12 hour vertical record of 331,160 vertical feet nearly 16 years ago."
Leveling The Camera
"I did not use the camera level and therefore the camera was pointed a bit downward, which is easy to correct but eyeballing everything on a ski helmet mount is not the best way to go," says Squire.
He adds, "Have a friend help you out once the helmet is on your head, then level the camera."
Importing
"When you shoot nearly 2 hours’ worth of footage it takes a while to import, probably 30 minutes as it was over a 30GB file size," says Squire.
He adds, "Next test will be in Hawaii surfing and snorkeling in early March and we just got the Garmin VIRB dive case so we are psyched."
Settings
"You want to make sure you have lens stabilization and all your settings complete because otherwise the ride looks a little bumpy," says Squire.
He adds, "You also have to remember to turn off the Wi-Fi after you have imported if you want to have full menu access - I learned this the hard way."
Ease of Use
"These cameras have a slightly greater learning curve than the Garmin GPS watches do, but if you are patient and give it a few outings you become a pro pretty quickly," says Squire.
He adds, "My goal was to get this mastered by March and I think my next outing will go much more smoothly, plus I'm testing a Garmin Tactix and can use it as a remote control."
Best Uses
"We feel that sports like skiing, skateboarding, surfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, snorkeling, mountain biking and other such action pursuits are the main domain for this product, not unlike the GoPro, or other action cameras," says Squire.
He adds, "I do like the fact that the VIRB Elite can deliver speed, pace, distance, heart rate, elevation and other statistics because in the mountains it makes the footage more interesting."
