Garrison Forest School Winter Sports Nab Two IAAM Championships
Owings Mills, Md. (PRWEB) February 28, 2015 -- Garrison Forest School (GFS) led in winter sports this season, taking home two IAAM Championships in February, the first time in GFS’ 105-year history that two teams in the same season have won championships. GFS Indoor Soccer shut out John Carroll in the IAAM-A Championship with a 1-0 victory, while Varsity Basketball ended an undefeated regular season with a 38-16 victory over Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to clinch the 2015 IAAM-C Championship.
Senior Laura Hancock scored the only goal in the Indoor Soccer match to lead the GFS Grizzlies to victory against the John Carroll Patriots on February 7. It was a highly anticipated match, as John Carroll had won both regular season games against GFS, the Grizzlies’ only losses of its impressive 9-2-1 season. Head Coach Bill Tarlton spoke about the plan that helped clinch the Grizzly’s win. “At Friday’s practice we developed a plan to defeat John Carroll that included a new formation and style of play,” Mr. Tarlton said. “The team believed in the plan, believed in themselves, and executed the plan flawlessly. They played at the highest level of the season.”
Varsity Basketball topped its incredible 20-1 season on February 15 at Stevenson University with a 38-16 victory over Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The talent, tenacity and teamwork of the Grizzly hoopsters earned the team the first GFS basketball championship since the 1993. Garrison Forest had played in a championship game in 2003, but came home without the trophy. Not so this season for this particular group of Grizzly athletes.
“I knew we would have a good team, but being undefeated in the league and winning the Championship was a great experience for all involved,” says head coach Nick Burns, who teaches Upper School history and has long coached Grizzly basketball teams. “I have been coaching for many years and have never had a team as unselfish as this one. No one cared about who got the credit and that is why we accomplished so much. We were tested many times this season but the players always rose to the challenge at key times. It was quite simply fun and a privilege to work with such a wonderful group of young women.”
Two GFS athletes were named IAAM Basketball All-Stars: Aaliyah Smith ’15 and Marina Lazarides ’17.
