Gary C. Butts, MD Appointed Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Mount Sinai Health System

Butts, MD, currently the Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs and a pediatrician holding professorships in Medical Education, Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has been appointed Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Butts, who has overseen diversity efforts at Mount Sinai since 1998, was also elevated to Senior Associate Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy and Community Affairs for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. In these roles, Dr. Butts is responsible for oversight, management and integration of all aspects of the Mount Sinai Health System’s diversity programs and policies to ensure diversity and inclusion as an integral, core institutional value and resource across the health system, including the medical and graduate schools, graduate medical education and the Hospitals Group.
Dr. Butts holds joint appointments as Professor with tenure in the Departments of Pediatrics, Medical Education and Preventive Medicine; he has been an integral member of the senior leadership team at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 1998. Dr. Butts has spent more than three decades providing healthcare services to East and Central Harlem residents; since 2009, he has developed and led efforts to improve and sustain racial, ethnic and gender diversity across all levels of education, training, and faculty for the School of Medicine. In 2004, Dr. Butts was appointed Associate Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy and Community Affairs and has directed the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA), which is recognized as a Health Resources and Services Administration Center of Excellence for Minority Health. Under Dr. Butts’s leadership, the student body at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has become one of the most diverse among private medical schools in the United States; furthermore, Mount Sinai has doubled the percent of black and Latino faculty and house staff.
Dr. Butts has held regional and national leadership positions with the Association of American Medical Colleges and Associated Medical Schools of New York, among other professional organizations.
Dr. Butts is a native New Yorker, raised in East New York, Brooklyn. He completed his premedical studies at Columbia College before attending Cornell Medical College. Dr. Butts completed his clinical training in pediatrics at Mount Sinai and has been part of the Mount Sinai Health System dating back to 1980, when it was called the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Butts’s career pathway has involved many facets of academic medicine, including organizing and directing an academic medical center pediatric clinic, developing and administering innovative, cutting - edge community based clinical services for both a medical center and local government, and directing diversity initiatives for the School of Medicine.
As Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health, between 1993 and 1998, Dr. Butts directed citywide health services planning, clinical service and program development, evaluation, health policy and national public health research for the largest municipal health department in the U.S.
