Gary Hayslip of the City of San Diego and Janus Claim Top Awards at ISE® West

Gary Hayslip, deputy director/chief information security officer for the City of San Diego, was selected as the Information Security Executive® of the Year Award winner for the ISE® West Region. As chief information security officer, Gary advises the City of San Diego’s executive leadership consisting of Mayoral, City Council, and 40+ city departments and agencies on protecting city government information resources. Gary oversees citywide/enterprise cyber security strategy and cyber security program, operations, compliance and risk assessment services. His mission includes creating a “risk aware” culture, placing high value on securing city information resources and protecting personal information entrusted to the City.
Selim Aissi, chief security officer for Ellie Mae, and Gary Coverdale, chief information security officer for Napa County, were honored during the event as finalists in the executive category. Steve Oberg, chief information security officer for DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. won the 2015 ISE® West People’s Choice Award. This award represents the nominee who best exemplifies information security leadership as voted on by his peers in information security.
The ISE® West Project of the Year winner was Janus for the project “ElasticSearch Security Visualization Engine,” which was used to pull in relevant security log information and provide an interface to rapidly search security relevant information. The project had zero dollar cost in software licensing and reduced incident response times by fifty percent.
Project finalists included DaVita Healthcare Partners’ “Application Security Program Management” and Visa’s “Implementing a Language-Based Security Software Development Life Cycle.”
