GEICO Steps Up to Fund Scholarships for Low-income Florida Students
Tampa, Florida (PRWEB) October 09, 2013 -- GEICO has announced that the company will be contributing $2 million to Step Up For Students, the nonprofit organization that administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program. This will fund scholarships for more than 397 low-income Florida students this school year.
On Wednesday, Oct. 2 the GEICO Gecko and company representatives visited St. Peter Claver Catholic School in Tampa to deliver the good news. The school is one of more than 1,500 in the state that participates in the Step Up For Students program. Approximately 120 students attend St. Peter Claver with help from the scholarship program this school year.
“GEICO has a strong commitment to the communities we serve, and helping to provide educational options for underprivileged families is a big way that we give back,” said George Rogers, GEICO regional vice president. “We are proud of our partnership with the Step Up For Students Scholarship Program, and could not be more pleased to know that our contributions are helping Florida students gain access to the best schools for the way they learn.”
This marks the fourth year that GEICO has supported the scholarship program. Since joining Step Up as a corporate partner in 2010, the company’s contributions have supported 2,225 scholarships.
Step Up For Students receives its funding through corporate donations. Companies with certain types of Florida tax liabilities can choose to redirect their taxes to fund scholarships for low-income families. Step Up For Students has awarded approximately 60,000 scholarships to low-income students this school year with scholarships valued up to $4,880 per student.
“With GEICO’s support over the past four years, our organization has been able to provide scholarships for more than 2,200 low-income students,” said Step Up For Students President Doug Tuthill. “We and our scholarship families are humbled and grateful for GEICO’s generosity.”
