Gelu Italian Ice of Grand Junction, Colo., Expands to Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
Lake Havasu City, Ariz. (PRWEB) June 30, 2015 -- A new business to help cool residents and tourists opened up in Lake Havasu City in early June.

The store is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and delivers pints and quart-size buckets right your boats.
“We visited the Grand Junction area and tried their popular Italian ice and we couldn’t help but think that this would be a great fit for Lake Havasu City,” said Gelu Havasu general manager Brett Marble.
Gelu Italian “water” ice is a mixture of fruit, water and sugar blended into a silky-smooth, refreshing dessert. It is dairy-free, gluten-free and cholesterol-free.
“Lake Havasu City has the distinction of being our company’s first franchise. We are so excited to introduce Gelu Italian Ice to Arizona,” said company co-owner Karin Gookin.
Gelu Italian Ice comes in more than 20 flavors, and growing, and is served in two sizes — small (two scoops) and large (four scoops). Flavors can be mixed and matched. Gelu also sells take-home sizes ranging from pints to 3-gallon containers.
“Our mission is to provide the highest quality and best-tasting flavors that are affordable to anybody’s budget,” Gookin said.
“We always offer free samples to our customers. We want folks to try each flavor to find their favorite winning combinations,” Gookin said.
Starting a business to satisfy your own sweet tooth isn’t exactly sound, but that’s exactly what company founders John Nelson and Karin and Ronn Gookin did in August 2013. Nelson grew up eating ice in his native Brooklyn, N.Y. The 75-year-old recipe comes from his Sicilian grandmother.
"I grew up eating my Grandma Bella's homemade Italian ice, and one day I was hit with a craving so I asked her for the recipe," Nelson added. The sorbet-like dessert was a hit with friends and family and prompted Nelson to try his hand at marketing it to the masses.
“We’ve got big plans to take Gelu Italian Ice to market across the Rocky Mountain region and Southwest,” Nelson said.
“We’re not going to stop franchising until Gelu is a household name,” Gookin said.
