Genetically Modified Marijuana Discussed in Latest Ganjapreneur.com Podcast
(PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- The most recent episode of the Ganjapreneur podcast, an ongoing series of interviews with cannabis entrepreneurs and industry leaders, features professional marijuana breeder Tyler Markwart who makes the case for genetically modified (GMO) cannabis.
Markwart has more than 20 years of experience growing and distributing cannabis through medical marijuana markets, and he is the founder of Allele Seeds Research, an American cannabis biotech company. He studied organic agriculture and philosophy at Washington State University, where he produced award-winning research through his work in the University's molecular plant science laboratory.
According to Markwart, cannabis growers could benefit greatly from an increased understanding of the possibilities in GMO technology. "The idea is you could remove the cold resistant genes from a salmon and put it in a plant, allowing that plant to exhibit better growth conditions under freezing temperatures or near freezing temperatures," Markwart tells Ganjapreneur host Shango Los.
Before his time at WSU, Markwart explains that he was strictly about organic growing. Once he got into a lab and began delving into the research, he eventually changed his mind and now advocates for GMO marijuana as an important next step for the industry.
