Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Launches New Summer Programs for Kids
Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) April 03, 2014 -- The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is excited to announce a slate of innovative family programming for Summer 2014. The Museum’s new family initiatives expand the outreach of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum—already a popular summer destination—with both self-guided and group activities for young families. Building on effective programs already in place, the Museum now provides interactive summer activities for families whether they are touring the galleries alone or participating in special classes and events.
“One of the best ways for children to have a rich experience visiting a museum is to have a conversation with their family members while looking at the artwork,” said Jackie M, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum director of education and public programs. “Our creative educational programming stimulates these conversation while instilling a love and appreciation of the arts.”
Family Activities in the Galleries:
The Museum’s complimentary, kid-friendly Discovery Guides help children experience and interact with the exhibitions currently on view at the Museum: “Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: The Hawai‘i Pictures” and “Georgia O’Keeffe: Abiquiu Views”. Children and their parents can enjoy the packets, find the prompts, answer questions, and offer opinions about the works on view. To encourage further creativity, the guides include suggestions of activities children can complete on-site or at home. The Museum also provides sketchbooks and pencils for drawing in the galleries.
For preschool aged children, the Museum provides the illustrated book, My Name is Georgia, which tells the story of O’Keeffe using simple language and shows examples of the subjects she painted.
Family Programming & Events:
Summer activities for children and families at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum—featuring regularly scheduled weekday and weekend classes—will begin with OK to Go. Held in the Museum’s courtyard, the OK to Go program offers families a place to stop and create an art piece. Run by Museum volunteers who provide art supplies and age-appropriate lessons, both kids and adults create a unique piece of art that relates directly to Hawaii Pictures or Abiquiu Views. The program will run from 10:30am-12:30pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays beginning in April, and will be held throughout the summer.
The O’Keeffe’s Saturday morning Family Program begins in the galleries before they are open to the general public. Children and families are free to view, discuss, and appreciate the works on view and then go on to the Museum’s Education Annex to create a piece of their own. Themes relate to those explored by O’Keeffe and other artists on view in the galleries and parents are welcome to create a project alongside their children. The program runs from 9:30-11:30AM on June 28, July 19 and August 2.
In partnership with the Santa Fe Opera, the O’Keeffe Museum will offer Opera Makes Sense at the O’Keeffe, a creative, sensory experience for 3-5 year olds and their families. The program will be offered on June 1, 2014 from 9:30-11:30AM.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum has offered family programs since its opening in 1997. Preschoolers who participated in these first programs have gone on to participate in other Museum programs throughout their school years, including programs for middle and high-school aged students.
