Get ASDSA ‘SUNucated’ on Don’t Fry Day!
Rolling Meadows, IL (PRWEB) May 25, 2017 -- Bringing needed attention to the rising rates of skin cancer from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) in collaboration with the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention (NCSCP), has designated the Friday before Memorial Day (May 26, 2017) as Don’t Fry Day. This day serves as part of a public awareness campaign that aims to reduce the incidence of skin cancer by promoting sun safety and encouraging the public to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors.
“Collaborating on ways to draw attention to skin cancer prevention and related issues is so important to me, personally, as a dermatologic surgeon and longtime member of ASDSA,” stated ASDSA President Thomas Rohrer, MD.
While participating in Don’t Fry Day last year, ASDSA launched SUNucate, an initiative focused on educating the public about prevention from the harmful effects of sun exposure. The centerpiece of SUNucate includes model legislation written to make sure children at school and camp can apply needed sunscreen or wear sun-protective clothing without restriction. Currently, four states this year adopted variations of this law (Alabama, Arizona, Utah and Washington), and it is pending legislation in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The law was modeled on what currently is on the books in California, Oregon and Texas.
A new blog devoted to skin cancer issues and SUNucate has been launched at SUNucate.org. The site spotlights skin cancer prevention activities, public awareness and prevention programs and how states and stakeholders can help pass SUNucate legislation. The first blog post was written by Terrence Cronin, Jr., MD, ASDSA State Affairs Work Group Chair.
“I am passionate about skin cancer prevention and treatment and think it is so important we help kids lessen their harmful sun exposure while outside at school and camp,” said Dr. Cronin.
With the onset of summer, Don’t Fry Day and SUNucate highlight how important skin cancer prevention measures are as both children and adults start spending more time outdoors. Exposure to harmful UV rays can increase the risk of skin cancer. Taking the time to become educated about the risks of UV exposure and implementing sun-safe behavior through regular sunscreen use and sun-protective clothing can make a substantial impact while still allowing for participation in outdoor activities.
