(PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- Often, individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other forms of lung disease, avoid exercise at all costs due to its ability to leave them feeling out of breath. Because of this reality, and in support of Healthy Lung Month, Lung Institute is providing exercise tips to sufferers in an effort to help increase their lung capacity and promote positive well-being.

When we think of exercise, we envision treadmills, personal trainers, and long runs outside. For sufferers of lung disease, these tasks are extremely difficult. Just getting up and going outside every day to get the mail can leave an individual with COPD out of breath. Lung Institute knows the everyday trials of lung disease and is asking sufferers to get up, get out, and get moving no matter what. Here are just some of the simple exercises that Lung Institute recommends to help sufferers breathe easier.

Yoga, Pilates, or Stretching Exercises: By stretching the muscles and increasing flexibility, the lungs will naturally increase their capacity, and the body will be better prepared for more strenuous forms of exercise.

Beginner Aerobics: Join a gym and try a beginner aerobics classes! The rhythmic pace of aerobics will increase endurance of the lungs, and will promote social interaction.

Deep Breathing Exercises: There are multiple types of breathing exercises available. Pick one that is challenging and practice every day. If it gets too intense, stop and rest, but always finish the exercise cycle.

Healthy Lung Month: Get Up, Get Out, and Get Breathing Lung Exercise Tips for COPD

In support of Healthy Lung Month, this week Lung Institute is providing exercises for healthy lungs. Whether an individual is suffering from lung disease or not, exercising is an essential part of any healthy lifestyle. Exercise supports the cardiovascular system, helps in healthy weight maintenance, and can actually help increase lung capacity and function.

We know that COPD patients often have difficulty getting from A to B, and think exercising is out of the question. We’re here to tell those with lung disease that ANY physical activity, even walking outside to get the mail, constitutes exercise. So, get up, get out, and get moving to help improve lung capacity!

Partaking in physical activity naturally brings more oxygen into the body and aids the metabolism in the release of carbon dioxide. While exercising, breathing will actually increase 15 times the normal amount per minute. During this time, the cardiovascular system also begins to work harder, increasing circulation to active muscles.

Many COPD sufferers stray away from physical activity as it makes them feel out of breath. This sensation will subside after a while, and is generally not dangerous. The benefits of exercising the lungs far exceed the discomfort of feeling out of breath.

Some other benefits of exercise include:
• Strengthening of the cardiovascular system
• Increased and prolonged energy
• Healthy weight maintenance
• Positive mental and emotional wellbeing
• Strengthening of the bones
• Increased social interaction from group exercise

How to Improve Lung Capacity
Smokers have the hardest time increasing lung capacity, due to the detrimental effects of the toxins on their lungs. Quitting smoking for the long-term is a vital step to improving lung capacity. Follow these simple exercises to increase lung capacity. Individuals should choose one or a combination of the following:

Yoga, Pilates, or Stretching Exercises: Stretching exercises are a great place to start, especially if an individual has been inactive for quite a while. By stretching the muscles and increasing flexibility, the lungs will naturally increase their capacity, and the body will be better prepared for more strenuous forms of exercise.

Beginner Aerobics: Join a gym and try one of their beginner aerobics classes. The rhythmic pace of aerobics will increase the endurance of the lungs, and promote social interaction.

Deep Breathing Exercises: Breathing exercises for the lungs are especially important for people with COPD. There are numerous breathing exercises available today for lung disease sufferers. The vital part of picking a breathing exercise is choosing one that is challenging. Don’t be scared to push the lungs. If it gets too intense, stop and rest, but always finish the exercise cycle.

There are support groups across the United States that hold breathing exercise classes for people with COPD. The internet is an amazing tool; look up a support group close by today! By following these simple steps individuals with lung disease will improve their quality of life and breathe easier.
