Gettysburg Library to Celebrate Building Centennial, Host Open House for Adams County Residents and Visitors
Gettysburg, Pa. (PRWEB) January 28, 2014 -- To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Gettysburg Federal Building, current home of the Adams County Library System, officials with the Adams County Library System have planned three days of community events to commemorate the past, present and future of this historic building in downtown Gettysburg. Events include an invitation-only gala on Friday, Feb. 21; Children’s Day on Saturday, Feb. 22; and a public open house on Sunday, Feb. 23.
The Feb. 21 gala celebration will be held at the Gettysburg Hotel, 1 Lincoln Square, and will feature a keynote speech by Professor David Eisenhower, grandson of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. David Eisenhower is the Director of the Institute for Public Service, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. The gala is by invitation only and tickets are required.
Library staff members have planned a variety of activities for the youngest library patrons on Saturday, Feb. 22. Children’s Day programming highlights include: face-painting, storytime and crafts, balloon art, refreshments and make-and-take crafts available throughout the day.
Adams County residents are invited to a public open house Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Gettysburg Library, 140 Baltimore St., to explore all the resources available to the public, meet the library staff and get an insider’s look at how the library system operates. In addition, the Adams County Library System’s 100th anniversary celebration committee will present renovation and improvement plans for the library during the open house, reveal the library’s new logo and offer complimentary refreshments.
“We at the Adams County Library System are extremely fortunate to be able to occupy this historic building and celebrate 100 years of local history of the Gettysburg Federal Building,” said Adams County Library System director Rob Lesher. “While we’re commemorating the past, we’re also looking forward to the future of the library system as we look for ways to enhance library services for residents of the Adams County community.”
The Gettysburg Federal Building was constructed in 1913 during the 50th anniversary year of the Battle of Gettysburg. The building originally served as Gettysburg’s U.S. post office and housed offices for the Internal Revenue Service and Gettysburg National Military Park. President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the building for his office upon completion of his term as president. The building has served as the home of Gettysburg’s library since 1992.
