Gilbane to Break Ground on CSUN Associated Students Sustainability Center
Northridge, California (PRWEB) September 21, 2016 -- Community representatives, students, faculty, staff and University officials were in attendance to celebrate the official groundbreaking for the California State University, Northridge, Associated Students Sustainability Center on Monday, September 19, 2016. The new facility will consist of a one-story 3,000 SF administrative building, and 5,000 SF covered yard building. Gilbane will serve as the Construction Manager at-Risk for the new center, which will be located north of the University Student Union’s Plaza del Sol, and will feature a seminar room, administrative offices, restrooms, and courtyard. Additionally, the covered yard building, servicing the University’s Associated Student’s recycling program, will house equipment for collection, shipment, sorting, and bundling of recyclable materials. The Center will also house the CSUN Institute for Sustainability.
“Gilbane is proud to be part of the Associated Students Sustainability Center team. It is truly a project being developed by the students for the students at CSUN. The building is a living example of sustainability - incorporating various elements of LEED, Net Zero and Living Building Challenge programs,” says Jennifer Farnham, Vice President, Gilbane. “The Center will be a model in both structure and purpose for the CSUN community, as well as for other institutions around the country.”
The project, which is designed by Gensler and Glumac, is striving to achieve LEED Platinum, as well as net-zero energy and net-zero water. Some Living Building Challenge elements have also been incorporated. A graywater system from onsite showers and lavatories will be used for irrigation; a solar thermal hot water system, vacuum composting toilets, and a 25kw photovoltaic system have also been incorporated into the project.
“We want people to see this building and say ‘something different is happening here," said David Crandall, the CSUN Associated Students Manager.
