Global Partnership Unveils Multimillion Dollar Funding Initiative to Support Collaborative Data Innovations for Sustainable Development
New York, New York (PRWEB) July 21, 2016 -- As part of the Collaborative Data Innovations for Sustainable Development Pilot Funding, which is supported by the World Bank’s Trust Fund for Statistical Capacity Building (TFSCB), the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data is now seeking innovative proposals for data production, dissemination and use, primarily in low income and lower middle income countries, for sustainable development generally and linked to the Sustainable Development Goals in particular.
The goal is to encourage collaboration, experimentation, learning and capacity development in the field of sustainable development data, especially where needs are continuous or recurrent, and where innovations can be readily adapted to other regions and sectors.
“This funding is meant to ensure that we harness all the different possibilities of collaboration and innovation— and ensure it’s scaled across regions and countries around the world — to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” Sanjeev Khagram, the Global Partnership’s coordinator, said at a July 18 event in New York, which featured a series of new commitments and tools to harness the data revolution for sustainable development, including a Data4SDGs Toolbox to help countries create and implement Data Roadmaps for Sustainable Development.
Expressions of interest are due by September 1, 2016, and will be reviewed by a multi-stakeholder peer review committee. A shortlist of proposals will be pre-selected by November 15, 2016; final decisions will be made public in February 2017.
Funding will be distributed after March 1, 2017, among the selected applicants for projects including research, experiments, collaboration or other activities in the development data field. The amount of funding for each project ranges from $25,000 to $250,000 depending on whether the project is embryonic or ready to scale up. The July 18 event coincided with the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and was hosted by the Global Partnership in collaboration with the governments of Colombia, Philippines, Sierra Leone and the United States of America. At the event, the Arab Republic of Egypt became the latest of more than 150 members to join the Global Partnership.

The Trust Fund for Statistical Capacity Building was established in 1999 by the Development Data Group of the World Bank to strengthen the capacity of statistical systems in developing countries. It is funded by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Government of Korea. The TFSCB currently finances a variety of projects, with a focus on improving the production and use of gender statistics, advancing the data foundation for measuring sustainable development, experimenting with innovative approaches in gathering, producing and using data and making government data more accessible.
