Global Warming Comments at Hand-in-Hand Fundraiser Mislead the Public and Divert Attention from Climate Change Adaptation and Needs of Cities says Friends of Science

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (PRWEB) September 14, 2017 -- The star-studded Hand-in-Hand Telethon of Sept. 12, 2017 raised some $44 million to help the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, as reported by ABC News, Sept. 13, 2017 but Friends of Science Society is critical of Stevie Wonder’s remarks on global warming, saying unscientific celebrity comments mislead the public.

Wonder stated: "Anyone who believes that there is no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent."

Friends of Science says warming is not the question - it is the cause of recent warming that is the subject of lively debate in scientific circles, especially since the US Senate testimony of Dr. John Christy of Mar. 29, 2017, showing that natural factors like the sun and oceans affect global warming more than human industrial greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions.

Despite the terrible hurricane destruction, the science says there's no connection to the recent nominal global warming.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its 2013 Fifth Assessment Report, says "Current datasets indicate no significant observed trends in global tropical cyclone frequency over the past century … No robust trends in annual numbers of tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes counts have been identified over the past 100 years in the North Atlantic basin.” Hurricane Harvey ended a 12-year hiatus of major hurricane landfalls in the USA.

But the catastrophic aftermath of flood damage from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are echoed in Friends of Science Society’s new reports, released Sept. 13, 2017,criticising the City of Calgary for focusing on being ‘green’ but taking little pro-active measures to address recurrent river flooding. In 2013, a combination of unusual weather patterns and deep snow packs led to a multi-billion-dollar flood of Calgary’s downtown core which is built on the flood plain confluence of two rivers. Other climate change-related initiatives– such as that of going 100% renewable - have incrementally driven up Calgary’s costs with no proper cost-benefit analysis.

A further negative consequence of misguided climate change policy is homelessness. A Sept. 12, 2017, commentary on the Watts Up With That blog expresses the view that millions of Americans are homeless thanks in part to expensive renewable energy policies driven by “climate madness.”

Al Gore’s recent movie makes a pitch for 100% renewable cities, suggesting wind farms and solar panels can stop climate change.

NASA scientist Dr. Roy Spencer published a now best-selling book entitled “An Inconvenient Deception” debunking Gore’s movie.

A Friends of Science blog post reports on a UK government survey of 2016 that shows most people in the world are more concerned about terrorism than climate change.
