Global Warming Continues Despite November 2014’s Broken Cold and Snow Records in United States

According to the weather.com report, November started out with arctic air and snow whipping downward from Siberia and the North Pole, breaking records for many parts of the country. Records included the coldest month of November, the coldest calendar day(s), and of course the earliest and heaviest snowstorms.
In fact, the entire country was stunned in mid-November by the cold. As Weather Bell illustrated on No. 18, “Tuesday morning, America ‘as a whole’ awoke to the coldest it has been in November since 1976 – 38 years ago.” With the images and stories in national news, it’s easy not to think about this on a global scale.
However, according to the BBC’s report, 2014 is still the warmest year on record on a global scale. The report states, “In the first 10 months of 2014, global average air temperature was about 0.57 Celsius above the long-term average.” Global warming appears to continue on an upward track, with 14 of the 15 warmest years occurring this century.
The BBC’s science editor also noted, “2014 [has] been a year of extremes.”
The report goes on to explain that a study conducted by the Met Office (the UK’s national weather service) found that these temperatures would be very unlikely if greenhouse gases produced by humans were not a component. One Met Office scientist stated, “In the world that would have been, it’s very unlikely that we’d see the temps we’re seeing now.”
