Golfweek Magazine Rates Whiteface Club and Resort in Lake Placid 4th Best Classic Layout in New York State Among Best Courses You Can Play
Lake Placid, NY (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 -- With golf season approaching in the Adirondacks, the Whiteface Club and Resort, on the shores of Lake Placid, has collected more prestigious awards from Golfweek Magazine.
The John Van Kleek-redesigned layout, in consultation with Walter Hagen, is ranked 11th in New York State among Golfweek Magazine’s 2014 Best Courses You Can Play. It is also ranked fourth among classic clubs in the state.
In the publication’s Top 15, the Whiteface Club is in the company of two-time U.S. Open host Bethpage Black, two of the courses at Turning Stone in Central New York, Saratoga National and Ravenwood, outside Rochester. It is the third time the Whiteface Club has appeared in this category.

The club continues to reinvest in its golf course by announcing the purchase of new greens and fairway mowers, while also making clubhouse improvements with expanded dining space on its new Veranda.
“Our goals are to make the best course in the Adirondacks even better, and continue our climb up the Golfweek rankings,” added Sperling. “Our objective is to be number one.”
The challenging layout, carved from the Adirondack pine 116 years ago, plays to a par of 71 and benefits from state-of-the-art irrigation. Its’ dramatic signature hole, the par 5 sixth, presents a stunning view of nearby Whiteface Mountain, site of the 1980 Winter Olympic alpine skiing events. This 490 yard hole starts with a precipitous drop from tee to fairway, followed by a dog leg left, and concludes with a climb of several stories over the final 90 yards to the green.
Also, the par three, 14th hole, measuring 211 yards uphill to a narrow, undulating green with out-of-bounds on the left and bunkers on both sides, may be the most difficult par in the Adirondacks.
Discerning golfers in Lake Placid will not only enjoy the course, but other amenities, too, on the 400 acre property. The golf course will open Friday, May 9, and features a slate of exciting golf events. Among the highlights: The J. Peter Martin Whiteface Open, July 12-13, brings the region’s top men and women amateurs together for a 36-hole competition; The Whiteface Club Championship, another 36-hole event, is set for Aug. 16-17 for members of the club; The Adirondack Senior Open and Pro-Am, part of the Sunbelt Senior Tour, Aug. 26-29, finds outstanding senior professionals tackling the challenging Whiteface Club track in a 54-hole stroke play format as they aspire to reach the Champions Tour.
