West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 03, 2014 -- Commenting on a Bloomberg Businessweek article raising concerns over whether advances in mobile technology will lead to increased distracted driving accidents, West Palm Beach car accident lawyer Charles Cartwright said drivers need to do their part to avoid being distracted by the latest gadgets.
Cartwright, an attorney in West Palm Beach with over 20 years’ experience, based his comments on a September 11 article, “Apple's Watch Adds More Distractions, and More Dangers.” The article cites recent advances in mobile technology such as larger cell phone screens and “smart” watches as cause for concern on roadways across the United States.
“There is no question that smart phones and other forms of mobile technology have become a critical part of our everyday life,” Cartwright said. “But people must use these devices responsibly, whether they’re wearing the new smart watch or using a cellphone. Texting while driving is illegal in Florida, but talking on a cellphone is not against the law. That doesn’t mean it’s a safe practice.”
Attorney Adriana Gonzalez added: “We have seen far too many injuries and fatalities related to drivers distracted by their mobile devices. We call on all drivers to make responsible decisions. Avoid distractions and focus on the important task of operating a motor vehicle.”
According to Bloomberg Businessweek, data from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that an estimated 421,000 people were injured in car accidents involving a distracted driver in 2012. Furthermore, the NHTSA indicates that about 3,300 people died in crashes involving distracted drivers.
The Bloomberg Businessweek article cited recent technological advances including larger phones and smart watches allowing connectivity to the internet as potential hazards for distracted drivers. According to the article, the target demographic for these new products – young adults in their 20s – make up close to one-third of distracted drivers involved in fatal car accidents across the United States.
