Good People Brewing Company Sets New Standards for Craft Brewers
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) October 23, 2013 -- In addition to being the oldest and largest brewery in the state, Good People Brewing Company is now the only brewery in Alabama to have not one, but two Certified Cicerones.
The term “Cicerone,” trademarked by The Craft Beer Institute, has become industry standard for identifying a beer expert. A Certified Cicerone, of which there are only 1,000 nationwide, is the second of three Cicerone levels- Certified Beer Server, Certified Cicerone and Master Cicerone- and is attained through written exams, tastings and demonstrations.
“A Certified Cicerone is referred to as the equivalent of a sommelier, but for beer,” explained Jenny Pfafflin, a brand manager at Cicerone Certification Program. “A lot can go wrong from when beer leaves the brewery to when it's poured in your glass. A Certified Cicerone has demonstrated enough knowledge to head off these pitfalls.”
“As Good People grows, it’s important that we demonstrate our commitment to quality first and foremost,” said Ben Lewellyn, the most recent Certified Cicerone at Good People. “The brewers show their commitment in every pint- this is just the sales team’s way of trying to keep up our end of the deal.”
Talk to one of the founders of Good People Brewing long enough, and you’ll find that “quality” is a common theme.
“We are as passionate about our product today as we were when we first started,” said Michael Sellers, Certified Cicerone and a co-founder of Good People Brewing.
“We got into this business because we love beer,” said Sellers. “And that passion drives us to learn more and improve our craft every day. Having two Certified Cicerones in our brewery just helps us maintain the level of quality our customers have come to expect from our beer.”
By passing the Certified Cicerone exam, Ben and Michael have demonstrated knowledge in five key areas: keeping and serving beer; beer styles; beer tasting and flavors; brewing ingredients and processes; and pairing beer with food.
Although the brewers at Good People Brewing Company have excelled in each of these five areas, pairing beer with food is an important part of the brewery, proven by their collaborations with some of the region’s best chefs.
“We’ve had the opportunity to work on beer pairings with Frank Stitt, owner and executive chef of Highlands Bar and Grill, Bottega Restaurant and Chez Fon Fon, and Rob McDaniel, executive chef of SpringHouse on Lake Martin,” said Lewellyn. “In collaborating with some of the best chefs in the nation, it’s important to us to uphold our end of the bargain with the quality of our beer.”
