Good Samaritan Death Not Uncommon
(PRWEB) July 23, 2013 -- Seeking to help a stranded motorist, a local pastor and two other good Samaritans were struck by a truck and killed two weeks ago. This kind of accident is tragically common according to Houston Accident Attorneys.
Brian Jennings, 41, was a youth pastor at a nearby church and a father of three. He and several neighbors went to help the driver of a disabled car near Spinks Airport shortly after midnight. That put several parked cars and at least four people on the roadside when a truck came around a bend and struck them, killing Jennings and two others according to KHOU article titled "Texas pastor, mom and daughter killed in crash" 6.17.13.
Houston Accident Attorneys is an organization that helps accident victims find attorneys qualified to give them legal support. Jennifer Fletcher, a spokesperson for the organization, says stopping to assist with a breakdown is commendable – but can easily lead to accidents.
“There is no doubt that Reverend Jennings and all of them did the right thing by helping a fellow motorist,” said Fletcher. “But all too often, we see this well-intentioned altruism turn tragic when another vehicle comes along.”
Fletcher says that visibility and caution are key when helping anyone on the roadside.
“Park well off on the shoulder, leave your lights on at night and never stand out in the traffic lane, she said. “If the breakdown is on a bend or hill you need to find a way to make it visible first.”
When good Samaritans are injured, Fletcher says they have options.
“Drivers have an obligation to give plenty of room to people on the roadside,” she said. “If you're injured trying to help someone out, it isn't your fault – call an attorney immediately.”
