Gordon Kerkham offers ‘Random Reflections of a Looney Bin’
KALAPA, Australia (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- In his new memoir, “Random Reflections of a Looney Bin” (published by iUniverse), author Gordon Kerkham reveals the coming-of-age experiences of a young man coming to terms with mental health, growing up, institutions, sex, alcohol and being a “miracle worker.”
“Random Reflections of a Looney Bin” is based on true events – described as “faction” by the author – based on his early experiences working at a large mental institution on the English border of Lancashire and Yorkshire, and several institutions around the world since. He describes his time spent at Halley Hospital from the late 1950s through to graduation in the mid 1960’s and in other facilities into the 1980s. His stories provide valuable insight into what it was like to work in a large mental institution during that time and he suggests that some are still like Halley today.
“The old mental health facilities are a closed door to most people,” Kerkham says. “This book will shed a little light and provide a lot of laughs about living and working in a mental health facility.”
An excerpt from “Random Reflections of a Looney Bin”:
“If you don’t like the expression Looney Bin, I don’t give a flying fart. That’s what they were. Bins where we deposited all that we didn’t want to know or care too much about in our society. They are also places of much joy.”
