Government Officials, Scholars and Practitioners From Around the World to Gather in Austria for Second International Conference on Taxpayer Rights
(PRWEB) December 15, 2016 -- The second International Conference on Taxpayer Rights will be held in Vienna, Austria, on March 13-14, 2017. The conference will be hosted by the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law at WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) and sponsored by Tax Analysts.
The conference is convened by National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent organization within the IRS that protects taxpayer rights and helps taxpayers resolve problems that cannot be resolved through regular IRS channels. It brings together government officials, scholars, and practitioners from around the world to explore how global taxpayer rights serve as the foundation for effective tax administration.
For two days, speakers, panelists and attendees will discuss tax policies and trends, including privacy and transparency in tax administration, taxpayer rights in multi-jurisdictional disputes, the taxpayer right to quality service, the impact of penalties on taxpayer trust, and transforming the cultures of tax agencies and taxpayers.
Conference sessions will include:
- The Framework and Justification for Taxpayer Rights
- Privacy and Transparency
- Protection of Taxpayer Rights in Multi-Jurisdictional Disputes
- Access to Rights: The Right to Quality Service in an Era of Reduced Agency Budgets
- Challenges of Scrutineering Entities: Fireside Chat with Inspectors General, Ombuds, and Advocates
- Penalties and General Anti-Avoidance Rules
- The Role of Intergovernmental Actors in Furthering and Protecting Taxpayer Rights: A Conversation
- Building Trust I: Transforming Cultures of Tax Agencies and Taxpayers
- Building Trust II: Safeguards on Tax Agency Power
“The inaugural International Conference on Taxpayer Rights held in 2015 for the first time brought together top thought leaders on taxpayer rights issues from around the world to share ideas and begin to develop concepts of ‘best practices,’” said Nina Olson, National Taxpayer Advocate. “One thing we learned very clearly is that effective tax systems place a high priority on taxpayer rights and earning the trust of their taxpayers. I'm delighted there has been strong interest in institutionalizing international conferences on taxpayer rights to share ideas and build on our success.”
More than 20 countries were represented at the inaugural conference last year, with 170 individuals in attendance. The conference featured Erich Kirchler, Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at the University of Vienna, as the keynote speaker and included two days of engaging panel sessions and remarks from National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson and IRS commissioner John Koskinen.
“The International Taxpayer Rights Conference offers an excellent range of topics presented by well-informed speakers,” noted a 2015 conference attendee. “Both the panels and attendees provided an interesting perspective of tax issues around the globe.”
