Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Receives State of Hawaii Green Business Award
Koloa, Kaua'i (PRWEB) August 12, 2014 -- The resort was also recognized for this award in 2004 and 2010. Some of the conservation efforts undertaken since last awarded include:
• Replacing 15,000 CFL lightbulbs with LED’s, reducing lighting energy used by 70%
• A guestroom renovation which incorporated low-flow showerheads, toilets, sink aerators, ceiling fans and carpets made with recycled yarns
• New thermostats in guestrooms with sensors on lanai doors to turn air-conditioning off if door is open
• A number of back-of-house projects including the installation of a cooling tower and heat pumps which reduce energy use for air-conditioning and heat rejection by 15-20% annually. Rejected heat produced by the air-conditioning system is used to heat the swimming pools and saltwater lagoon.
Other measures in place to reduce waste and conserve natural resources include:
• A photovoltaic system which produces 465,000 kWh per year of clean renewable energy
• Recycle bins in each guestroom, as well as throughout the resort, encourage guests to deposit glass, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans.
• An average of 15 tons of recyclables are diverted monthly from the island’s landfill in addition to kitchen wet waste going to pig farmers and green waste to compost putting the resorts overall diversion rate at 40-60%.
• Allowing guests to choose if they want their linens changed each day saves over 500,000 gallons of water each year
• Green Earth dry cleaning replaces petroleum-based solvents with silicone, from silica or sand.
Cumulatively, the resort’s energy conservation efforts have resulted in a 17% reduction in energy used as compared to 10 years ago, 20% as compared to 15 years ago. This equates to a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 10,000 tons or more than 23 million miles driven by the average passenger car.

Tsutsui stated, “Honorees have proven themselves to be responsible stewards of business and the environment...showcasing a deep commitment to preserve and protect our precious natural resources…Efforts like these will reduce our impact on the environment and reliance on imported fossil fuels.”
