Granddaughter Fulfills Grandmother’s Dying Wish with ‘But One Husband’
FLORENCE, Ore. (PRWEB) March 30, 2016 -- Between 1925 and 1950, Luella Pool Saxby wrote a story about her great-grandmother’s life, taken directly from her diaries, but she never fulfilled her dream of publishing her work. Handing it to her granddaughter, Joan, just weeks before she died, Saxby’s wish has come true with “But One Husband: The Truth about Mormon History by a Woman Who Lived It” (published by iUniverse), a true, historical autobiography of Sarah Ann Thirkell. Joan embarks on a new marketing campaign for the book.
The story begins in 1849 in Yorkshire, England, with Sarah Ann's father, John Thirkell, who is the gamekeeper for Lord Cardigan, worried about raising his five daughters around such a philandering royal. He is approached by Mormon missionaries, who promise John a life of harmony, opportunity and brotherhood if he takes his family to America and serves their leader, Brigham Young.
“Since the diaries were written in the 1800s, I never met any of the book’s characters, but the combined story and images have helped me grow very close to them,” Joan says. “While readers won’t have the same blood connection that I do, they will find the images powerful and engaging; giving them a deeper understanding of the sacrifices many people made to better the lives of those around them,” she adds.
To help readers visualize the life and times of the book’s characters, original photographs have been included. Taken in the 1850s and 1860s, every image was photographed by one of Saxby’s relatives.

Luella Pool Saxby spent 25 years writing “But One Husband” from the original diaries of her great-grandmother, Sarah Ann Thirkell. Born in 1893, Saxby was a police matron, department store detective, artist, poet and business owner before her death in 1989.
