Grant a Dream Fulfills 'Bucket List' for Seniors at Retirement Community
Suffolk, VA (PRWEB) April 29, 2015 -- It was a perfect day for a baseball game – lots of sunshine, Cracker Jacks, and hot dogs. Stan Johnson, a resident of Lake Prince Woods healthcare center, had his dream come true of seeing another Tidewater Tides baseball game in Norfolk.
United Church Homes and Services, the parent company of Lake Prince Woods, instituted a program earlier this year called “Grant a Dream” to fulfill wishes for residents.
“Through “Grant a Dream” we will make it possible for residents to re-live pleasant experiences from the past or perhaps fulfill something that’s on their ‘bucket list’,” noted UCHS President Lee Syria. At another UCHS retirement community a resident who had been a farmer wanted to see a John Deere tractor again and one was brought to him.
Stan Johnson has been a resident at Lake Prince Woods for about nine years, moving to the retirement community from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A huge baseball fan, the walls of his room have photos of his favorite baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds. While living in Atlanta he attended Braves games, but Cincinnati was always his team.
When asked what he liked best about attending the Tides game he said, “We won!”. Staff members made arrangements with the Tides management who provided special seating and free tickets. “Stan had a wonderful time at the game,” noted Lake Prince Woods Activity Director Stephanie Lohr. Other Lake Prince Woods staff members accompanied them and were pleased to be part of making Stan’s dream come true.
