Green Lawn Fertilizing Participates in Renewal and Remembrance Day at Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington, VA (PRWEB) July 18, 2016 -- Walking amongst the over 400,000 tombstones at Arlington National Cemetery is a humbling experience. Underneath each one of those tombstones are the remains of one of our service men or women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. These men and women put their county ahead of themselves. They were deployed thousands of miles from their family and friends and put their lives on the line every single day. This kind of selflessness can never be repaid. However, it is their sacrifice that we keep in mind when we try to give just a little bit back.
On Monday, July 11th, 2016 seven members of the Green Lawn Fertilizing team joined over 400 other lawn and landscape professionals for the 20th Annual Renewal and Remembrance Day at Arlington, National Cemetery. Organized by the National Association of Landscape Professionals, Renewal and Remembrance is the lawn and landscape industry’s way of donating their time and skills to honor America’s veterans by helping keep Arlington National Cemetery’s grounds beautiful.
In years past Green Lawn Fertilizing employees as well as the other lawn and landscape professionals participating in Renewal and Remembrance have largely focused on applying lime to the soil in an effort to reduce its acidity and promote more favorable turfgrass growth. The lime applications were so effective that this year the focus was shifted to other work including phosphorous application, aeration, irrigation installation and repairs, tree cabling, and landscaping projects.
The Green Lawn Fertilizing team drew aeration duty. We dropped off our aerators at the cemetery a day earlier so that when we arrived at our station we were all set up. We pushed the aerators up and down the perfectly parallel rows of grass while being extremely careful of the headstones. Over the course of the day we treated several acres. The aeration process helped to reduce soil compaction which in turn helps to allow more oxygen and nutrients reach the root system of the cemetery turfgrass.
Of course, the work we did to treat the cemetery turf was only a small part of our overall experience at Renewal and Remembrance Day. The morning started off with a ceremony in which a few of the event organizers and veterans connected with the cemetery spoke about the ultimate sacrifice the veterans buried at Arlington made and how integral they were in protecting our freedoms. One of the event organizers, who was also a veteran, spoke to how hard it is for many our veterans coming back from combat acclimating to regular life in the US. So many of these veterans, some of them seriously wounded in battle, wish they could have given even more for their country. That kind of dedication is hard to fathom to those of us who have not served, but our President, Matt Jesson, who was one the members of Green Lawn Fertilizing who made the trip down to Arlington, put it really succinctly:
“It’s such an honor to be here standing among all these fallen heroes. They gave their lives for us. Being here today is the very least we can do to only begin to repay our debt of gratitude to these brave veterans.”
While walking through the cemetery throughout the day we saw several military funerals taking place and a couple more funeral precessions. After we finished treating the grounds we started walking back towards the Memorial Amphitheater, where the morning ceremony took place. On our way we passed one of the Marines working at the cemetery and asked how many funerals were taking place that day to which he replied, twenty-seven. Twenty-seven veterans being laid to rest on a Monday in July in a single cemetery is crazy to think about. A similar number of funerals likely were scheduled for the day after and the day after that. It was just another reminder of why we at Green Lawn Fertilizing come back to Renewal and Remembrance Day year after year. While we are happy and proud to do our small part to beautify the Arlington National Cemetery grounds, it is taking that day out of our busy schedules to remember the sheer number of courageous veterans who have fought for our freedoms that is the most important aspect of event and its why we’ll be back at the 21st annual Renewal and Remembrance Day next year.
