Greenway Park Water Quality Retrofit Moves Forward
Norfolk, Virginia (PRWEB) January 27, 2014 -- Construction began this week at Greenway Park Water Quality Retrofit, an underutilized greenspace in Norfolk’s historic East Haven Creek watershed. This City-owned park is a high priority restoration project identified in the recently developed Watershed Action Plan for Lafayette River. Timmons Group, a leader in multi-disciplined civil engineering and professional consulting services, provided environmental permitting, geotechnical engineering studies, preliminary and final stormwater designs, public outreach and is currently performing construction administration services to make this park more usable within the East Haven community.
Greenway Park, a water quality enhancement retrofit project, sits over a large concrete box culvert, which drains untreated into Haven Creek, a tributary of the Lafayette River. Frequent tidal fluctuations and trapped water on the surface keep the park permanently soggy and prone to mosquitos. In order to maximize pollutant removal efficiency given the site constraints, the optimal design involved creating an enhanced retention basin (type III). The new stormwater system will contain two hydraulically connected cells including both intertidal and high marsh areas with a pilot floating wetland island. The proposed solution reduces phosphorus loading by 65%, nitrogen loading by 40%, sediment loading by 55% and treats a drainage area of about 19 acres of previously untreated historic residential area, which can all be directly applied to the Chesapeake Bay TMDL goals.
The project was recently selected to receive grant money for construction through the Virginia DEQ Stormwater Local Assistance Fund and is expected to be complete by the middle of this year.
