Greenwood-Leflore Public Library System Reports 33% Increase in Circulation of Children’s Books Following Addition of AWE’s Early Literacy Station Computers
Chester, PA (PRWEB) October 31, 2013 -- Greenwood-Leflore Public Library System in Mississippi has reported that its 2012-2013 fiscal year circulation numbers have increased significantly following the addition of AWE’s Early Literacy Station™ and AfterSchool Edge™ computers to its two branches. The library has three Early Literacy Stations and three AfterSchool Edge computers at its main location and one each at its secondary, part-time branch.
From June 2012 through June 2013, the number of books checked out by children increased by a total of 33% across the library system over the previous time period.
These statistics were provided by Jenniffer Stephenson, Director, Greenwood-Leflore Public Library System. Stephenson cites the implementation of the AWE computers as a significant factor in the increase in circulation, library visits, and the academic progress of many children.
“We have had nearly 4,000 sessions and over 1,200 hours spent on [the AWE computers] in one year. I have had testimony from parents about how these computers have helped their children with school and improve grades,” said Stephenson.
She goes on to give a specific example of the impact AWE’s solutions have had on one particular child: “I had one mother who started bringing her child to the library to do homework at the beginning of last school year. He was in first grade, he hated school, and he hated doing homework, but he noticed the new AWE computers and wanted to ‘play’ with them. The mother began using the computers as a bargaining chip to get him to finish his homework without any fighting and reluctance. After the first semester, she happily reported to me that he was now on the honor roll, and she didn’t have to fight with him to get homework done. The library is now his favorite place to go, and he likes to come even when he doesn’t have homework to do. So, overall, we have been very pleased with the results and our patrons love the computers.”
AWE’s Early Literacy Station (geared for children 2-8 years old) and AfterSchool Edge (6-12 years old) include comprehensive, best-of-breed software programs for children that cover all curricular areas, from math and reading to science and art. Each product includes over 60 programs. The Early Literacy Station, AWE’s flagship digital product, is found in more than 35% of public library systems in the United States.
