Grinnell Mutual announces finalists for Working Together Making It Better grants
Grinnell, Iowa (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- Ten community projects are finalists in Grinnell Mutual’s Working Together Making It Better grant initiative. The public is invited to vote for project finalists on the company’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/myGrinnellMutual. With help from its Facebook fans, Grinnell Mutual will distribute $3,500 in grants to three non-profit organizations.
“People living and working in rural areas know what it takes to make a community a better place,” said Director of Advertising and Community Relations Barb Baker.
Working Together Making It Better recognizes the efforts of people across rural communities who are working to enhance their town facilities and landmarks, support their neighbors, and educate their children. These grants are Grinnell Mutual’s way of celebrating community collaboration and recognizing innovative community projects.
“Anyone can vote for a project,” said Baker. “Each vote on Grinnell Mutual’s Facebook page will help decide which projects will receive one of the three grants.”
Working Together Making It Better Finalists:
Agriculture in the Classroom in Lee County, Ill., provides agriculture-based, curriculum-friendly lessons to students and teachers (pre-kindergarten to eighth grade) free of charge. Funds are needed for resources such as books, instructional materials, and field trips.
Cascade Community Aquatic Center of Cascade, Iowa, proposes a project to demolish a 50-year-old community swimming pool and build a new ADA-compliant aquatic center and facilities.
Comunidad Emprendedora of West Liberty, Iowa, is a program that equips, encourages, empowers, educates, and supports underserved Latino entrepreneurs and small businesses through one-on-one mentoring, workshops, networking events, and collaboration. Funds would be used for sponsoring Latino entrepreneurs, promotional material, and training tools.
Custer County Search and Rescue of Custer County, S.D., requests funds to purchase a patient hauler for a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle (UTV) that would allow for safer transportation of injured people to a waiting ambulance.
Fur Fun Rescue of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a no-kill, foster-based rescue that gives dogs a second chance at a life. The rescue’s goal is to take dogs in need, put them into foster homes, and match them with permanent homes. Funds for the organization would be used for vaccinations and required flea, tick, and heart-worm preventatives.
Join the Journey of Rochester, Minn., is a program that promotes breast cancer awareness and supports individuals on their breast cancer journey. Funds would be used to maintain and expand the program.
Linn County (Iowa) Fair requests funds to install a water supply to the fire sprinkler system in the Lynn Dunn Memorial Building. This facility is used for educational and community events.
Puppy Jake Foundation of Des Moines, Iowa, raises, professionally trains, and places service dogs with wounded military veterans. Funds would be used for training purposes.
REAL Men Read of Angola, Ind., is a program where male volunteer “MENtors” read and talk to second graders for 30 minutes each week for nine weeks. MENtors show students that REAL men do read and value education. Funds would purchase books that are provided to each student for free by a MENtor.
Wapello County Trails Council Highway 34 Tunnel Project requests funds to construct a lighted underpass beneath Highway 34 in Ottumwa, Iowa, to provide a safe connection between two sets of trail systems.
