Ground-Breaking Reports Published on Low Carbon London Trials.
(PRWEB UK) 26 January 2015 -- The results from new technologies trialled on London’s electricity distribution network, operated by UK Power Networks, contribute to 14 reports submitted to the industry regulator, Ofgem. They detail technical and economic benefits resulting from the use of Active Network Management and offer a practical guide for Distributed Network Operators (DNOs) on assessing and supporting the connection of distributed generation.
UK Power Networks, Britain’s largest Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), led the £28.3 million Low Carbon London project with 11 partners, including Smarter Grid Solutions, to investigate the impact of low carbon and Active Network Management technologies on London’s electricity network.
The results
The trials have enabled UK Power Networks to evaluate the technical and economic benefits of Active Network Management for managing and monitoring distributed generation, demand side response and smart electric vehicle charging. Over 25 MW of load and generation, including over 47 electric vehicle charge posts across London with a total capacity of over 600 kW, were managed by the Active Network Management system during the trials.
The savings
The case studies presented in the Report A8 indicate that savings on network reinforcement are significant - for example, up to £441k at one of the primary substations assessed. Similarly, Report A9 shows that further savings can be achieved when Active Network Management is used to support the connection of additional generation. For example, the net benefit available at one of the primary substations assessed can be increased to £934k.
“Our analysis has detailed how Active Network Management could be applied to manage fault level constraints and enable additional Distributed Generation (DG) connections in urban networks.” said Michael Clark, programme director for UK Power Networks, Low Carbon London. “The Low Carbon London trial explored the use of Active Network Management to autonomously manage the connectivity and power export of DG, effectively dealing with power flow, voltage or fault level constraints identified during the connection analysis. We hope this expands on the opportunity to offer customers a flexible connection solution, avoiding the need to pay for network upgrades.”
