To answer these questions, leading researchers have begun to explore the direct and indirect effects of aquatic therapy in regards to cognition and gait. Their results will be more deeply explored in a groundbreaking ICAA (International Council on Active Aging) webinar, “Influence of an Aquatic Environment on Cognition and Gait," sponsored by HydroWorx on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EDT.
“Influence of an Aquatic Environment on Cognition and Gait” will be led by Dr. Eadric Bressel and Dr. Dennis Dolny, both of Utah State University. Dr. Bressel is a professor and clinical research scientist in the Sports Medicine Program; Dr. Dolny is the department head of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in the College of Education and Human Services. Both have pioneered hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise research, and continue to use scientific tests to back the anecdotal findings of elite runners, professional athletes and physical therapy experts, as well as their clients and patients.
This one-hour webinar will concentrate on several areas of aquatic therapy, gait and cognition, including:
- The types of underwater therapy (e.g., underwater treadmill walking, shallow pool walking, deep water walking) that have proven beneficial for patients who may not be able to function as well in land-based locomotion therapies.
- How cognition is enhanced when a patient undergoes specific exercises in an aquatic modality such as a pool with treadmill floor.

About the Presenters
Eadric Bressel, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in biomechanics and regularly researches neuromechanical adaptations to therapeutics exercise in his role at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. He is a member of the American Society of Biomechanics, as well as the American College of Sports Medicine.
Dennis Dolny, Ph.D. has chaired 10 doctoral committees and published 30 peer-reviewed research articles during his professional career. His laboratory at Utah State University collaborates with the Sports Medicine department, specializing in an examination of the role of hydrotherapy in rehabilitation following lower extremity surgical procedures and joint replacement in the elderly.
