Group Aims to Take Manhattan to the Beach by 2016
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 19, 2014 -- City Beach NYC today announced that it’s ready to hit the beach and do away with commuting to the Montauk to do so. City Beach NYC consists of a floating barge with self-contained beach and mix of retail space, dining establishments and a marine science exhibit. City Beach will be the first project of its kind in for New York and complements existing efforts around NYC to create innovative, exciting and flexible public spaces.
The new project was conceptualized by City Beach NYC’s founder Blayne Ross, and designed by workshop/apd and Craft Engineering Studio. The optimal site would be located near the west side of Manhattan in the Hudson River and initial funding will be raised through a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGogo beginning Monday, June 23rd.
“Having a white-sand beach located on the banks of the Hudson River gives access to a favorite summer location without requiring travel to outer boroughs,” said Ross, “It’s an exciting time for our waterways in New York. With projects like this, we have the opportunity to create a space that enhances the summer experience in Manhattan and support the City and State Waterfront Revitalization Initiative, improving the quality of life for our residents.”
Mixed Use for Maximum Benefit:
The City Beach NYC project will be built on a reclaimed construction-deck barge, with retail space and restaurants on the first floor and changing rooms and marine science exhibit on the lower level. On the upper deck, the curved “chip” roofline provides residents with an unobstructed 360-degree beach experience. City Beach NYC seeks to be free of charge to all users and supported by the amenities the experience offers through beach chairs, umbrellas, cabana rentals and sponsor partnerships.
City Beach NYC supports Vision 2020 and WAVES (Waterfront Vision and Enhancement Strategy) created by the Bloomberg administration to revitalize NYC waterfront by increasing economic development, integrating with the surrounding community and allowing new and unique access to the waterfront.
Community Leadership:
The project will showcase the behind the scenes talent and document the process through video and social media interaction. “Projects like this don’t just happen without hundreds of people touching them along the way, I’d like to introduce those people and inspire others to create projects that make the city better for all of us,” said Ross.
