Hall and Hall Announces Auction of George Washington Family Land in Virginia
(PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- A farm once owned by the family of George Washington is scheduled for auction June 3, 2014. The property, known as Clifton, is a roughly 411-acre working cattle farm located in Clarke County, VA, only 3 miles north of Berryville and 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. It has a 5-bedroom, 4½-bathroom main house, a guesthouse, and an array of farm buildings. The property was once part of Fairfield, an estate owned by Warner Washington I, a first cousin to George Washington. George worked as a surveyor in the area as a young man and spent a lot of time on the property. The farm continued as a place of importance during the Civil War. Clifton figured prominently in the history of both our nation and the State of Virginia. Senators, governors, plantation owners, musicians, and artists have gathered at the mansion house to share Clifton’s warm hospitality. During the Civil War, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson quartered his cavalry in the Barracks Barn, the mansion house served as headquarters for General John Mosby’s main Confederate army in August 1864, and later Union General Phil Sheridan directed maneuvers in the northern Shenandoah Valley from the farm.
The main house on the property is done in a Palladian Classical Revival style with a four-over-four floor plan and 12½ foot ceilings. It has been fully renovated with seven fire places, Winchester style mantels, heart pine floors, egg and dart crown molding, a pool with waterfall edge & in-pool hot tub. The guest home, also fully renovated, is stone construction with three bedrooms and a library.
Farm facilities on the property include a large bank barn, 4-stall barn, 15-bay machine shed, milking barn, 10-stall center aisle barn, miles of fencing and a new well and watering system.
