Halloween Night Safety and Driving Tips
Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- By now, everyone should know that all children and adults should wear brightly colored clothes for Halloween. Bright colors are easier to see at night by motorists. Their parents should also place other sorts of gadgets which will let others know they are walking near the road or crossing the street.
Kids love to run everywhere during Halloween night and it is probably not an easy time to have kids slow down or try to keep them from beating other kids to the neighbor’s door for the best candy. As hard as it may be, try and keep your children close or as close as possible and attempt to not let them run. Keep in mind, there will be many drivers on the road that night and not all of them will be concerned for the safety of children. When children run they are also likely to fall or trip over Halloween decorations on yards and they may hurt themselves. The best scenarios will be attributed to not running and staying as close as possible to parents.
Everyone should also use the sidewalk as the main path of travel. The street or a busy road is certainly not an advised path to use for walking and should be avoided. The safest footpath for travel during Halloween or any other time for pedestrians is always the sidewalk. Too heighten everyone’s alertness, according to a State Farm study, Halloween maybe one of the most dangerous evenings involving children in automobile accidents.
Know the pedestrians laws of the state. Some states only give pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks or sidewalks; Texas is one of those states. The Texas defensive driving course, Comedy Driving, Inc., teach their students such information and also advise their students that while walking on the road it is not a good idea to text on a cellphone.
It is a common belief that only automobiles have accidents while the driver texting and operating the vehicle, but pedestrians can also be involved in accidents while they text. Parents should focus primarily on their children and avoid trying to text while walking. Pedestrians endanger themselves and their children by not paying attention to where they are walking.
For those that will not be out and walking, it is equally important to still be safe for Halloween. Motorists’ that plan to drive anywhere, especially in a residential area, should make sure they are fully aware of their surroundings at all times. Double and even triple check before backing out of a driveway to ensure there are no children behind the vehicle before proceeding in reverse. More than ever, it is imperative to obey all traffic and warning signs as there will be more pedestrians out on a that typical night. Also, keep in mind that it will likely be dark outside as well.
Remember, some children may be out without adult supervision and may not be taking proper precautions when crossing the street. Be extremely cautious, do not just watch for someone to cross at a crosswalk or a corner; pedestrians may cross the road at any part of an intersection. Children will be unpredictable and might decide to cross a road anywhere and at any time. With costumes come a lot of extra risks as many of them may be dark colors and hard to see at night, which is one more reason to practice defensive driving while out on Halloween.
