Halt Medical and The Fibroids Project Announce Collaboration to Increase Awareness of Fibroid Treatment Options
Livermore, California (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- Halt Medical, Inc., the developer of the innovative, minimally invasive Acessa™ Procedure for symptomatic uterine fibroids, and The Fibroids Project, one of the nation’s leading patient advocacy organizations for women suffering from fibroids, today announced that they have entered into an agreement to enable greater awareness of treatment options for women suffering from this common and debilitating condition. The two organizations have planned a series of educational initiatives during Fibroid Awareness Week, April 19-25, and are working together to bring greater awareness of treatment options for women suffering from the debilitating symptoms of fibroids.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with The Fibroids Project to aid its mission to educate and empower women to make informed decisions about treating their fibroids,” said Russ DeLonzor, Halt Medical’s President. “Many women may not be aware that there are other, less invasive treatment options that do not involve damaging or removing the uterus, as is the case with hysterectomy,” he continued. Hysterectomy is the most common surgical procedure for fibroids, but many women would prefer to avoid the long recovery times and body-changing effect of such surgery.
Renee Brown Small, Co-Founder of The Fibroids Project, adds, “I hear from women suffering from fibroids every day. Often they tell me that their doctor has told them that a hysterectomy is their only option. But that’s not necessarily true and our goal at The Fibroids Project is to ensure that women have all the information they need to make an informed decision about what treatment option is best for them. We are pleased to be working with Halt Medical to educate women about their treatment options, and Fibroid Awareness Week is the perfect time to launch our partnership.”
About Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are benign, non-cancerous tumors in a woman’s uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Also called leiomyomas, fibroids are made up of muscle and connective tissue and may range in size from microscopic to larger than a grapefruit. The rate at which they grow is unpredictable, and a woman may have more than one fibroid at a time. While some fibroids are asymptomatic, others can be very painful and cause heavy bleeding, pressure on the bladder or rectum, a distended abdomen, and a lack of energy stemming from anemia. The majority of American women will develop fibroids at some point in their lives. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), at least 70 percent of women in the U.S. will develop fibroids by age 50, and the prevalence is even higher among African American women.
About Halt Medical, Inc. and Acessa
Halt Medical is a medical device innovator focused on establishing a new standard of care for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. Its Acessa Procedure is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure that delivers radiofrequency energy to destroy fibroids, and relieves symptoms without damaging or removing the uterus. After treatment, the fibroids are re-absorbed by the surrounding tissue. Acessa allows the surgeon to treat only the fibroids, while preserving normal function of the uterus. Patients typically go home the same day with little pain, and enjoy a rapid return to normal activities. Acessa is FDA-cleared for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids.
