Hanley Wood Announces Winners of 2017 Multifamily Executive Awards

Three executives and 35 project winners were honored at a special event held during the 2017 Multifamily Executive Conference, which took place September 18–20 in Las Vegas.

Each year, MULTIFAMILY EXECUTIVE honors the industry’s best and brightest with its prestigious MFE Awards competition. Winning projects, leaders, and initiatives are featured in the September and October issues of MFE and at http://www.multifamilyexecutive.com.

For the first time this year, Multifamily Executive awarded a Hall of Fame honor to an executive whose career contributions have had a transformative impact on the industry as a whole. Jonathan F. P. Rose, president, Jonathan Rose Companies in Katonah, N.Y., was honored as our first Hall of Fame inductee. Over the course of his career, Rose and his team have scaled Jonathan Rose Cos. to 15,000 units, with $2 billion–plus in invested projects, and created a signature impact investment and development business model whose quadruple bottom line puts profit on par with purpose, people, and the planet.

Yat-Pang Au, CEO and founder of Veritas Investments in San Francisco, was honored as the 2017 MFE Executive of the Year. Au grew his company, which was founded in 2007, from a boutique outfit that controlled a handful of properties he owned personally to a player that garners attention from major institutional investors and brokers. Last year, Veritas closed on an $815 million refinance of a roughly 2,220-unit portfolio.

Benjamin Collins, vice president and senior managing director for Charlotte-based Crescent Communities, was honored as the 2017 MFE Rising Star. His consumer-first approach to community design follows macro indicators in favor of isolating extremely underserved submarket renter demographics. At only 37 years old, Collins is responsible for 5,600 units of development and $1.3 billion worth of total capitalization accounting for approximately 60% of Crescent’s entire multifamily business portfolio.

The 2017 MFE Editors’ Choice Award was presented to BRIDGE Housing for its Abigail Apartments development in Portland, Ore. BRIDGE Housing brought affordable, family-friendly apartments to the city’s Pearl District neighborhood, adding product diversity to the community. The project includes 128 affordable and 27 market-rate units ranging from studios to three-bedrooms, and offers family-focused amenities; close proximity to transportation, schools, and parks; and on-site family services, such as eviction prevention, tutoring, and job-search assistance.
