Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas to Sponsor 33rd Annual St. Patrick’s 5K Run/Fitness Walk
San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) December 30, 2015 -- The Harp & Shamrock Society (HSS) of Texas will hold its 33rd annual “Donovan’s 5K Run & Fitness Walk” at Lady Bird Johnson Park on Saturday March 19, 2016, with chip timing by IAAP. Participants are encouraged to be as green as possible; bring green pets; and/or wear the ugliest kilts.
This is the longest running (pun intended) 5K fun run celebrating Irish heritage in San Antonio, held in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. It is also one of the longest running 5K charity runs in the city.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Harp & Shamrock Society scholarship program, which has bestowed more than $60,000 in academic and cultural scholarships to San Antonio students. St. Peter & St. Joseph’s Children’s Home also benefits from the local run.
“This is the original St. Patrick’s 5K run; accept no substitutes,” says longtime Race Director Terence "Terry" Peak, 2015 Irishman of the Year and Harp & Shamrock Society board member. “No other San Antonio fun run rewards runners and pets for being the greenest or for wearing the ugliest kilt.”
The race will start to the sound of bagpipes at 8:30 a.m. for all participants. Participants will enjoy music from Beethoven Dance Band, complimentary snacks and Guinness. The first 500 registrants receive a free t-shirt. Strollers and leashed dogs are permitted on the park grounds.
Online registration is available now at http://register.iaapweb.com/search/event.aspx?id=35265 and closes March 17 at midnight. On-site registration is available at Run Wild Sports, Soler’s Sports locations, and Fleet Feet Sports through March 17 for those paying with cash or check. Race-day registration starts at 6:30 a.m. at Lady Bird Johnson Park.
Packets can be picked up Friday, March 18 at Run Wild Sports, 1900 Broadway, from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. or beginning at 6:30 a.m. on race day at the park. Race entry includes free admission to the Harp & Shamrock Irish Festival at the University of Incarnate Word, on the same day.

Who: In 2016, the Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas will celebrate its 50th Anniversary of keeping Irish history and culture alive in San Antonio and South Texas. The Irish legacy in Texas started in 1836 at the birth of Texas with 188 defenders at the Alamo (of which 12 were Irish-born); four Irishmen who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, and 100 listed in the rolls of the Texians fighting at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Harp & Shamrock Society’s many special events support the Harp & Shamrock Society scholarships; UIW Sean Burke Scholarship Fund; educational materials about early Irish settlements in San Antonio, including the Irish Flats and Avoca; and other charitable organizations in San Antonio. New members are welcome.
