“I wanted to document the U.S. shale plays while the people who know the stories are here to tell them,” said Darbonne. “The recurring theme is U.S. oil and gas producers’ unrelenting pursuit to extract oil and natural gas from tight, stubborn rock. As it came together, the book became a guide for making more shale plays by understanding how this has been done before. There are many clues in it as to what is possible in the future by understanding what has been tried in the past.”
The easy-to-understand book spans 68 years of U.S. hydrocarbon-production history and focuses on six shale plays beginning in 1981.
“This is an excellent written account of how things went down,” said Dan Steward, geologist and author of The Barnett Shale Play: Phoenix of the Fort Worth Basin, A History.
“The amount of research seems staggering to me but, more importantly, complete,” said Dick Findley, the geologist who mapped a porosity trend in Montana in 1996 that inspired the modern Bakken play.
