Healthy Halloween Habits For Adults and Children
Newport News, VA (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Riverside Health System's Dr. Felice Haake, DO wants parents and children to know there are healthy options during Halloween.
Haake, of the Riverside Weight Loss Program for Children and Teens, suggests looking for fun "non-food" ways to spend Halloween. Perhaps have friends over to do a Halloween craft project or watch a scary movie. Make healthy food items a centerpiece at your party.
Consider giving away things other than candy to trick-or-treaters. Small items like stickers and plastic toys (scary ones like spiders or skulls, even!) can be found at dollar stores or party stores, Haake said.
When going trick or treating go with a plan!
"Perhaps allow yourself one small piece of candy from what you collected each day for five days and then pitch the rest of it," Haake said. "The key to avoiding overindulgence is to go in with a plan and follow through!"
Donate candy. Senior senior citizen homes and some businesses are often glad to accept candy. Also try a dentist’s office, who often trade for some dental supplies.
For parents, Haake said, reward children for not eating the candy. Some healthy ideas may be night out to the movies or a new outfit. The reward can be of the child’s choosing but should be "non-food" preferably.
Footage of Haake talking about the children’s weight loss program is available. To interview Haake (pronounced "hock-ee") about healthy Halloween habits, please contact Peter Glagola, Riverside Public Relations at (757) 534-7096.
