HEAR Bullying Prevention Student Survey Confirms Severity of Bullying in Middle Schools, Highlights Effectiveness of Direct Student Engagement
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) December 16, 2015 -- HEAR – Helping Everyone Achieve Respect, a national bullying prevention organization, has released the results of a survey given to more than 1,100 middle school students participating in pilot presentations of HEAR for Middle Schools nationwide over the past year. HEAR for Middle Schools is a research-based bullying prevention presentation designed to engage today’s middle school students on what constitutes bullying, its consequences, and how they can help minimize bullying in their school environment.
Highlights of the student survey include the following:
- 69% of student respondents reported having witnessed bullying in their schools in the past year, and 60% of respondents felt that bullying is a problem in their schools.
- 90% of student respondents reported that the HEAR for Middle Schools presentation gave them good ideas for what to do if they witnessed bullying.
- 93% of student respondents reported that, as a result of the HEAR for Middle Schools presentation, they will try harder to respect and include others.
According to Dr. Amy M. Smith, Director of Educational Programs at CTC, the results of the survey reinforced the findings of previously published research concerning the severity of bullying in our nation’s schools. “We find it troubling that more than two thirds of middle school students surveyed have personally witnessed bullying in their schools over the past year,” noted Smith. “These numbers closely mirror the results of our surveys of high school students over the past few years, and demonstrate that bullying represents a serious challenge to the health and safety of our middle school students as well.”
Smith also noted, however, that a classroom-based approach of direct student engagement appears to have a significant impact on helping middle school students change their behavior with respect to bullying. “We are encouraged to see that HEAR for Middle Schools is being accepted and appreciated by middle schools students, and excited to realize how committed these students are to changing their own behavior to help fight bullying in their schools and communities.”
Leading childhood education and psychology researchers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Nebraska—Lincoln have teamed with educational training professionals at Career Training Concepts, Inc. (CTC) to create HEAR for Middle Schools. The presentation combines unparalleled research and best practices with real-world student engagement. The result is a proven classroom-based solution that teaches students how to identify bullying and what they can do to help thwart this destructive behavior.
HEAR for Middle Schools consists of a 50-minute interactive classroom presentation, 16-page student workbook, training manual, PowerPoint slides, a student commitment banner, student survey and other valuable research and reference resources. The presentation is now available at a relatively low cost-per-student as a comprehensive curriculum package, a fully delivered classroom service, or through a variety of curriculum materials and teacher training solutions.
HEAR for High Schools is a similarly structured bullying prevention program presented at no cost to schools by trained members of the National Guard in alignment with the Guard’s core principles and reputation for serving, protecting and defending our communities. Since its inception two years ago, more than 400,000 student workbooks have been delivered to the Guard for presentation to high schools in 46 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
Participation in all HEAR programs offers the option to take part in Making Caring Common’s Caring Schools Initiative, which provides schools with survey tools and resources that can prevent bullying behaviors and promote positive school culture.
CTC is currently seeking corporate partners to help defray the cost to schools of experiencing the benefits of HEAR for Middle Schools. For information on how to sponsor HEAR for Middle Schools, contact Michael Ares at mares(at)careertrain(dot)com.
