Hedging Bets on Dogs; Manuel Acosta Releases New Handicapping Manual
Vancouver, WA (PRWEB) March 25, 2014 -- Going to any racetrack can be an adventure, especially if gambling is involved. A longtime greyhound racing fan and author has created a new manual for handicapping greyhound races, drawing on his experiences at the track and studying statistics. Although Manuel Acosta cautions that no system will work 100 percent of the time, including his own, readers can increase their odds of success with careful study and application.
“Handicapper’s Outline” includes the author’s experiences and thoughts on greyhound races, comments on other handicap systems, a summary of common dog race handicap terminology and a description of the grading system with past performance practices for all known U.S. greyhound tracks now running in the United States. In his manual, Acosta reminds racing fans of the multiple factors involved in trying to pick race winners: dog and track grades, running style, box advantage, lifetime winning percentage, kennel/trainer win percentage and back checks.
Although his step-by-step handicapping technique may pay off in the end, Acosta adds a cautionary note to those who might want to bet it all, writing, “Dogs aren’t subject to any handicap system, grade system, or any other system that we humans may develop in our efforts to handicap (predict) the winners.”
This is the first book for Manuel Acosta, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam and retired as a law enforcement officer with 25 years of service. He spent time at the Woodlands greyhound dog track in Basehor, Kan., as well as at Bluffs Run track in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He gathered records on greyhound racing but it stayed in a file cabinet for 17 years before Acosta decided to work on his dog race handicap system in earnest. He now lives in Washington.
