Linear Tape Open (“LTO”) and Linear Tape Files System (“LTFS”) improve the archival and retrieval process considerably in comparison to other methods available. Storage options such as SAN arrays, removable hard drives, and optical disks are limited in various capacities. Whether its power consumption, transfer speeds, or storage capacity, LTO and LTFS offer advantages in terms of reliability, speed and cost effectiveness. “With the demand for 2K, 4K and 5K on the rise, the importance of having systems and processes in place to support these formats is paramount,” comments Sam. LTFS technology brings the added fluidity of using LTO as a direct access system as well. Incorporating LTFS into the process fuses the features of LTO with the immediacy of access found in hard drives, creating a long-term data storage solution for file-based content.
These services are being offered to clients that are currently working on projects at Henninger, as well as to clients who want to preserve and significantly extend the shelf life of their media libraries. “We have worked with a number of organizations with extensive libraries of older film and video tapes, who want to safeguard these irreplaceable assets,” shares Henninger's Chief Operating Officer, Eric Hansen. “While starting the process of preserving so many assets can be daunting, we work with our clients to develop solutions that can tackle this project over a period of time, making the process and the budget much more manageable.”
Shelf life of older magnetic videotapes and film vary based on the conditions in which they are stored. Hard drives are susceptible to failure after extended periods of inactivity as well. LTOs, which have no moving parts, are projected to have a shelf life of 30 years. “We understand that LTO may not be the most practical solution in every case and that budgets or libraries may not warrant the use of the system,” shares Crawford. “Clients that may have one tape or a small library can benefit from storage on a digital tape format as well.” Henninger currently has one of the most extensive machine rooms in the Mid-Atlantic, boasting the capability of being able to handle more than 30 different film, video tape, audio tape, and disc formats. “Every project is different,” says Hansen, “so every archival project is customized to our clients’ long-term needs.”
