Nashville, TN (PRWEB) April 29, 2015 -- Heroes in Recovery, a movement seeking to break stigmas associated with addiction and mental health issues, is teaming up with The Justice Project, a non-profit organization working to improve injustice in a number of arenas, to offer a national essay competition.
The competition is open to individuals from all walks of life, who complete a written essay that addresses the relationship between social (in)justice and addiction. So as to allow a range of approaches to this broad topic, the specifications for this essay are purposely general. Entries may be in the form of a memoir, social commentary, editorial, or analytic essay. The winning essay will receive $1000. The second place essay will receive $700, while the third place essay will receive $300.
“The Justice Project is dedicated to raising awareness and proactively addressing justice issues on a significant scale,” states Executive Director, Noah benShea. “This contest is designed to give voice to people all over the world who experience or witness the injustice of addiction and want to be heard to and have action taken.”
“We are excited to participate with The Justice Project to make this competition a reality,” remarked Lee Pepper, Chief Marketing Officer for Foundations Recovery Network. “With millions of people struggling with addiction, it is important that their stories be heard so that society can begin to empathize with these individuals and help lower the barriers associated with seeking help.”
These original essays are limited up to 1000 words and must be submitted in English before June 1, 2015 on the Heroes in Recovery website at the following link. The essays will be judged on their merit by a panel of expert scholars and justice advocates. Winners will be announced July 1, 2015 and published by both the Justice Project and Heroes in Recovery websites.
This prize purse for this contest is made possible by the generosity of Foundations Recovery Network, one of founding members of the Heroes in Recovery movement.

About Heroes in Recovery:
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 20 million people needed substance abuse treatment last year and did not receive it. Ten million Americans did not receive needed mental health care. The stigmas associated with substance abuse and mental health disorders create a significant barrier to individuals and families seeking help.
Heroes in Recovery is a grassroots movement intended to remove the social stigma associated with people who are in recovery, to recognize the heroic effort it takes to overcome the obstacles in seeking help, and to celebrate the act of preventing the past from kidnapping the future. While the movement initially focuses on persons recovering from addictive behavior, it is meant also to recognize heroes recovering from many other types of disorders and trauma that can feed or manifest from an addiction.
