High-Speed USDOT Number Reader Poised to Advance Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement on the Mainline
Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- Perceptics announced today a U.S. DOT Number Reader system able to capture vital U.S. DOT number, KYU and Motor Carrier number data with 85% accuracy at highway speeds for mainline screening or virtual weigh station applications. Earlier this month, Perceptics, working with the Kentucky Transportation Center, demonstrated the DOT-HS at interstate highway speeds. Contacts with the Transportation Center remarked on the system’s ability to accurately capture DOT number and other data, including hard-to-read, scripted, or low contrasting fonts.
At present, most mainline screening for commercial vehicle safety enforcement is done through transponder-based systems on the mainline. However, a large majority of commercial carriers opt not to enroll in transponder screening programs. Screening at the weigh station is effective when the infrastructure is able to accommodate high volumes of traffic and is equipped with pre-sort or by-pass lanes. However, when screening capabilities at the weigh stations is limited, it is more cost effective to implement mainline or virtual weigh station technologies to achieve greater levels of safety enforcement.
A contact with the Kentucky Transportation Center remarked that states who want to screen a larger percentage of commercial vehicles on the mainline or in remote locations must make full use of all available vehicle identifiers. License plate numbers render vehicle specific data such as registrations. DOT Number Data which is tied to a specific commercial motor carrier gives insight into several relevant enforcement data points, such as federal out-of-service order, a company’s driver out-of-service, vehicle’s out-of-service, and hazmat out-of-service rates, and credentials such as UCR, IFTA, and liability insurance. Databases such as PRISM and SAFER allow enforcement officers to check a combination of these data points. In most cases, tying the license plate number to the DOT number and checking against both databases will return all the mentioned data points, empowering states to screen a larger population of commercial vehicles on the mainline.
