HITN/Early Learning Collaborative Teams Up with Radio Disney and Other Community Organizers to Ring in the New Year
New York, NY (PRWEB) December 19, 2013 -- The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN) Early Learning Collaborative (ELC) is joining community organizers this holiday season to celebrate the New Year and Three Kings Day, a popular Latin America holiday. The New York City events will provide food, fun, and music for area children. At both events, HITN/ELC will feature educational English language interactive development app activities, photo opportunities, and activities for the kids.
On December 31, HITN/ELC is partnering with Radio Disney New York for an early New Year’s Eve celebration so kids can have fun with their families before bed-time. The event will be held at Riverbank State Park for an ice-skating and dance party from 11 am to 2 pm. There will be a countdown to noon, similar to the popular midnight countdown, with a party full of prizes and music following. The Noon Year's Eve event will consist of "Disney on Ice" characters performing at the facility's ice skating rink and teaching the kids how to ice skate.
The following week, HITN/ELC will join another area organizations on Monday, January 6 to celebrate “El Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos” or “Three Kings Day”. The event will be held at New York’s only Latino children’s theatre, Teatro SEA/Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center from 3 pm to 5 pm. Live music will be provided by Los Pleneros de la 21, a community-based music ensemble from Spanish Harlem, and free food and beverages will be provided by GOYA. Admission is free and the event is for children and families of all ages. The first 1000 children to arrive will get the opportunity to meet the three kings and receive a free gift.
At both events, HITN/ELC will provide engaging digital and non-digital learning activities for the children featuring the animated character Pocoyo and his friends. There will be fun surprises including free bilingual storybooks and personal journals both in English and Spanish with activities for children that incorporate music concepts and vocabulary into their personal story.

The Early Learning Collaborative (ELC) is designed to leverage the power of technology and transmedia content to help ensure three-to-five-year-old children are fully prepared to begin kindergarten and succeed in school and beyond. The ELC initiative includes three components: digital media applications, educational outreach, and research.
The ELC is currently funded in part by a U.S. Department of Education Ready to Learn grant. The Michael Cohen Group is conducting ongoing formative and summative studies to determine the effectiveness of the materials in each of the 23 Pocoyo PlayGround transmedia sets. The ELC currently has several pilot programs in Alabama, California, Florida, Maine, Oregon, Wisconsin, New York, and Washington D. C. that are currently using the interactive and engaging Pocoyo PlayGround digital, print and manipulative materials.
