Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Presents a Greek Red-Figure Kylix Depicting Olympic Long Jumpers
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 27, 2013 -- Hixenbaugh Ancient Art announces the recent acquisition of over forty ancient objects. Among the new acquisitions is an Athenian red-figure kylix, a wine cup, painted in the 5th century BC by the Tarquinia Painter. The vase depicts athletes training for the long jump by leaping with weighted halteres (dumbbells) in their hands.
The kylix was an ancient Greek wine cup of broad and shallow form with a long stem and handles at each side. Kylixes were typically decorated with amusing scenes on both the interior (tondo) and exterior. The tondo of this kylix depicts a reclining god drinking wine from a phiale (libation bowl). On the exterior, six nude male athletes train for the long jump with weighted halteres in their hands.
The Tarquinia Painter is the name given to an accomplished and prolific Athenian red-figure vase painter who flourished ca. 470-460 BC. The painter is named after a vase found in an Etruscan tomb that is now in the Museo Nazionale Tarquiniese, Italy. The Tarquinia Painter worked during the zenith of Athenian culture and power in the years following the Greeks astonishing victory over the Persian Empire. Banqueters and athletes were among the artist’s favorite subjects. Only a few dozen vases by the Tarquinia Painter have survived.
