Hoehn Family Galleries Reveals New Fall Exhibition
San Diego, Calif. (PRWEB) September 13, 2016 -- The Hoehn Family Galleries, located on the historic University of San Diego (USD) campus, has announced a new exhibition, Imprint: Recent Acquisitions and Highlights from USD’s Print Collection, on display October 6 – December 16, 2016. This exhibition will feature more than 60 works highlighting significant recent gifts to USD’s growing Print Collection.
The Collection has grown exponentially, tripling in the last four years, enriching the Collection with a diverse history of the graphic arts itself, reaching as far back as the 15th century, and hailing from Asia, Europe, and the U.S. Imprint will also feature Collection highlights, with works by seminal graphic artists including Albrecht Dürer, Hendrick Goltzius, Edward Munch, Anthony van Dyck, James McNeill Whistler, Honoré Daumier, and Harry Sternberg among others. This exhibition represents the ambition of University Galleries to depict the depth of the graphic arts history to USD’s students and the broader San Diego community, while honoring the generosity and spirit of its supporters that make it all possible.
Imprint: Recent Acquisitions and Highlights from USD’s Print Collection Opening Reception will be Thursday, October 6 from 5 - 7 p.m. A special tour with Curator Erin Sullivan Maynes will be offered to guests at 6 p.m. The reception will include refreshments and light appetizers throughout the evening. The exhibition and Opening Reception is free and open to the public.
Accompanying the Imprint exhibition at the new Humanities Center - located in Serra Hall on the University’s campus - will be Student Acquisitions from USD’s Print Collection. This inaugural exhibition in the Humanities Center Gallery will feature the initial results of an inspired gift from the Legler Benbough Foundation. The new endowment has enabled University Galleries to launch a student-driven acquisitions program where undergraduates are given the opportunity to research, identify, and acquire works of art as part of group projects in art history classes taught at USD. After nearly five years, seven works have been added to the permanent collection as a result of these projects, a process that helps demystify the art world for the students and allows them to choose significant pieces that speak to them. Shown together with the successful proposals that led to the acquisition committees’ decisions, these prints represent the invaluable perspective that USD students bring to collection development at USD, and beyond. This attached exhibition at the Humanities Center Gallery runs October 14 – December 16. There will be a special presentation on October 12 at 5:30 p.m. titled “Two Americas, One Place: Grandma Moses and Shirley Jackson” by art historian and renowned professor in the Arts and Humanities at Stanford University Alexander Nemerov.
Another exciting lecture coming this fall will be 30 Years of the Brighton Press on November 10 by Bill Kelly and Michele Burgess, founder and director of Brighton Press. Brighton Press, founded in 1985, has published over 46 artists books and broadsides that are included in numerous important collections including the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, the Getty Research Institute, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Bill and Michele will speak to their experiences at the press and share some of their beautiful books, including two examples exhibited in Imprint. The talk will be at 5:15 p.m. in the French Parlor in Founders Hall and is free and open to the public.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday noon to 5 p.m. All exhibitions and related programs are free.
About the Hoehn Family Galleries
The Hoehn Family Galleries is located at Founders Hall 102 at University of San Diego, 5998 Alcaia Park, San Diego, Calif., 92110. For general information call 619-260-7516, or visit http://www.sandiego.edu/galleries/.
The fine art exhibition program at USD traces its origins back to the 1980s, when Professor Therese Truitt Whitcomb began organizing installations with the help of her students in a converted classroom space near the front entrance to Founders Hall. Over the course of the next 25 years, more than 100 exhibitions were mounted in Founders Gallery until it was expanded, professionalized and re-named the Hoehn Family Galleries in 2002, thanks to a generous gift from Robert and Karen Hoehn, long-time supporters of the Arts at USD. The Hoehn Family Galleries now function as a primary place for exhibiting fine art prints regularly during the academic year. Exhibitions held have included shows of loaned work from global institutions, as well as works from University Galleries' own impressive and extensive print collection.
